On the occasion of International Women’s Day (8th March 2025), the Association of Surgeons of Assam organized an awareness program at Dispur Law College, Dharmananda Das Avenue, Rukminigaon, Dispur at DLC Auditoium, focusing on crucial health topics affecting women. The event aimed to educate and empower women by addressing key aspects of mental health, menstrual health, pelvic cancer awareness, and breast cancer awareness.
Eminent surgeons and healthcare professionals conducted interactive sessions, highlighting the importance of mental well-being (Speaker – Dr Dorothy Bhandari Deka), the need to break taboos surrounding menstrual health, and the early detection and prevention of pelvic (Speaker – Dr Dipti Goswami), and breast cancers (Speaker – Dr JN Buragohain).
Speakers discussed how stress, anxiety, and societal pressures impact women’s health and offered practical strategies for maintaining emotional resilience. A dedicated session on menstrual health sought to break myths and taboos, encouraging young women to prioritize hygiene, recognize abnormal symptoms, and seek medical help without hesitation. The importance of early diagnosis and preventive measures for pelvic cancers, including cervical and ovarian cancer, was highlighted, with discussions on screening methods such as Pap smears and HPV vaccination. A significant portion of the event focused on breast cancer awareness, educating attendees on self-examination techniques, the importance of regular screenings. The speakers stressed the need for early intervention to improve survival rates and reduce stigma associated with cancer diagnoses.
