Guwahati, 15 September 2026: A Continuing Medical Education (CME) programme was held at Gateway Grandeur, Guwahati, bringing together surgeons of Guwahati for an engaging academic programme covering challenging areas of contemporary surgery as well as the remarkable evolution of surgical knowledge.
One of the highlights was a presentation by Dr. Prakash Kumar Sasmal, Professor of Surgery, AIIMS Bhubaneswar and President AMASI East Zone on the spectrum of pelvic and perineal hernias. He also shared his experience with the Sashmul Flare technique for parastomal hernia. His vivid presentation, complemented by excellent-quality operative videos, stimulated an engaging discussion and provided practical insights into the management of these technically demanding conditions.
Another memorable session was delivered by Dr. Rupnayan Goswami, who spoke on the evolution of paediatric surgery, with particular emphasis on oesophageal atresia and tracheo-oesophageal fistula. Tracing the origins and development of paediatric surgery, he took the audience through different eras of surgical practice and demonstrated how surgeons, over generations, painstakingly accumulated observations, experiences, successes and failures.
The presentation highlighted how the collective and cumulative experience of generations of surgeons gradually created the knowledge base that underpins modern paediatric surgery. Conditions that were once formidable and frequently fatal could, through this accumulated experience and progressive refinement of technique, eventually be treated with a much greater margin of safety and predictability.
The CME therefore offered more than a discussion of contemporary surgical techniques. It also provided an opportunity to reflect on how surgical knowledge progresses—from individual observations and experience to collective wisdom, innovation and, ultimately, safer patient care.
The organisers expressed their sincere appreciation to both speakers for their valuable contributions, excellent presentations and stimulating discussions, which added considerable depth and academic value to the programme.
