ASI Guwahati City Branch Launches Certified Basic Medical Emergency Care Program for Students

The Guwahati City Branch of the Assam State Chapter of the Association of Surgeons of India (ASI) has officially launched a Certified Program on Basic Medical Emergency Care in collaboration with Srimanta Sankaradeva University of Health Sciences (SSUHS).

The inaugural session was held on 12th February 2026 at 2:00 PM at the Dispur College Auditorium, Guwahati, with support from Marwari Hospitals. The event was presided over by Hon’ble Vice Chancellor Dr. Anup Kumar Barman, Hon’ble Secretary Dr. Sujit Bordhan, Principal N. Borah, Chairperson Dr. P. P. Das, Ex-Chairperson & HOD Surgery Dr. Kanakeswar Bhuyan, and Vice Chairperson Dr. R. C. Brahma.

This pioneering initiative aims to equip college students with essential life-saving skills and practical knowledge to effectively respond to common medical and trauma emergencies before professional medical assistance arrives. The program reflects ASI’s commitment to extending surgical and medical awareness beyond hospital settings into the wider community.

The program has been designed and convened by Dr. R. C. Brahma, Academic Registrar, SSUHS, and Vice Chairman of the Assam State Chapter of ASI. Senior surgeons and experienced faculty members will conduct structured interactive sessions, including live demonstrations and supervised hands-on training.

Key Training Components Include:

  • Basic CPR (Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation)
  • Management of choking and airway obstruction
  • First response to bleeding and trauma
  • Handling fainting, seizures, and allergic reactions
  • Practical demonstrations with guided skill practice

Speaking on the occasion, representatives of the Guwahati City Branch emphasized that emergency preparedness is not merely a medical competency but a civic responsibility. Empowering young individuals with timely intervention skills can significantly improve survival outcomes during the critical minutes before professional help arrives.

The Guwahati City Branch of ASI plans to expand this certified training program to other colleges and educational institutions across Assam, thereby strengthening community-level emergency response capacity and fostering a culture of preparedness among youth.
